  1. DTU-Based Model: Supported Azure SQL Database only
  2. vCore-Based Model: Supported Azure SQL Database and Managed instance

Azure SQL Single Database Tiers Options

  • DTU-Based Purchase Model: Supported 3 level of Database Tiers (Basic, Stander, Premium)

  • VCore-Based Purchase Model: Supported 3 level of Database Tiers (GP General Purpose, Hyperscale, Business Critical)
Database Tiers in vCore-based

Azure Single Database Tiers on DTU-Based

Azure Single Database supported most of the Database tiers for the Two purchased mode DTU and vCore

  • Azure Single Database cannot support Database Size more than 4 TB
  • Azure Single Database in Premium Database Tier Support Read Scale-Out: The Read Scale-Out feature allows you to load balance SQL Database read-only workloads and this option not related for Geo-replication of Auto failover it is a feature supported by DTU Premium Tier and vCore Business Critical
  • Azure Single Database in Premium Database Tier supported database zone redundant in Selected rejoins as a high availability solution for more information check this post and this option supported also in Business Critical tier.

Azure Single Database Tiers on vCore-Based (GP)

  • Maximum Database Can be hosted in this tier is 4 TB with maximum 80 Cores when using Gen5 Compute hardware
  • GP Serverless Compute the resources based on your use not like the Provisioned compute the resource as Pre-allocated
  • GP Serverless billed per second based on your usage on vCore but the Provisioned billed per hour.
  • In GP Serverless you can Configure the maximum vCore and Minimum vCore, then based on this configuration automatically the memory will be calculated in the MAX and MIN
  • Auto-pause delay option in GP Serverless you can configure when your Azure SQL can be Auto-pause and this configuration will be accepted and applied when there is no session on Database and the CPU usage is ZERO for more information check this post also Auto-pause delay option not supported some options such as Geo-replication, Sync Database, LTR, Elastic Job

Azure Single Database Tiers on vCore-Based (Hyperscale)

The Hyperscale service tier in Azure SQL Database is the newest service tier in the vCore-based purchasing model and The first thing you need to know it that if you configure your Azure SQL Database Tier as vCore Hyperscale you will not be able to change this tier again for more information check this article and this article also.

  • Hyperscale supported only Gen5 (HS_Gen5_80) as Compute Hardware (up to 80 vCores, up to 408 GB memory)
  • Hyperscale supported up to 4 Secondary Replicas
  • Hyperscale supported Up to 100 TB Database Size

  • Gen4 hardware is being phased out and is no longer available for new deployments. All new databases must be deployed on Gen5 hardware.
  • Gen5 is available in most regions worldwide.
